KISIIZI HOSPITAL, SOUTH WEST UGANDA Kisiizi Hospital is a Christian mission hospital in rural south west Uganda. The hospital was set up in 1958, supported by the Church of Uganda, aiming then as now to bring practical care to the very poor population in the surrounding area. The hospital’s motto is ‘Life in all its fullness’ (John Chapter 10v10). http://www.kisiizihospital.org.ug CONNECTED COOKERS…a background In rural Uganda, the majority of people cook on ‘3 stone fires’ – in effect, an open fire surrounded by 3 stones which support the pan. This means that mothers & babies in particular spend several hours every day breathing in smoke, leading inevitably to damaged lungs. The hospital (where no food is provided, but instead a patient’s relative cooks for them) now has only improved cookstoves instead of 3 stone fires, so the next step is to educate and encourage more folk in the community to switch to improved stoves. WHAT IS AN IMPROVED COOKSTOVE? AND WHY? There are a huge number of different designs of stoves which in effect make less smoke by creating a hotter flame, therefore burning off the toxic gases found in smoke. There are several advantages of improved stoves, including: * improved health * fewer burns from open flames * half as much wood used * reduces deforestation CONNECTED COOKERS…what you can do Few people in the Kisiizi area are able to afford even the small amount it costs to buy an improved cookstove.
