Coaching Awards                                 (Overview of changes for 2018)

These pages are under development. The new Coach Awards go live in January 2019 &

British Canoeing will publish the course syllabi shortly.

 British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor

For many coaches the BC Paddlesport Instructor award  is the first step on the coaching pathway. The qualification introduces the fundamentals of safe, ethical and effective coaching.  Candidates are trained to coach basic skills to paddlers in any type of paddlesport craft in a sheltered, flat-water environment.  A range of coaching tips, games and activities are built into the course, along with time spent developing technical and tactical understanding of these skills. The Paddlesport Instructor can plan, deliver and review short coaching sessions, normally with the support of a more qualified coach. They can work with paddlers at any stage of development, but will receive specific training to coach paddlers in their first year of activity, and to run taster sessions.

Transferring from old scheme

For coaches already in the Level 2 scheme, either trained or assessed, there are easy options to transfer into your next level.

  • If you are trained or assessed at Level 2  you do not need to (but may enjoy) the Core training
  • If you are trained but not yet assessed then you can move straight to assessment for the sheltered water Canoe/Kayak, or dual assessment
  • If you have a level 2 and the appropriate leadership award you can move straight to a discipline specific training
  • If you have done your MWE training  you can move directly to assessment.

There are some differences in the Log Book, Workbook and Assessment Portfolio requirements.

You will also need to get or transfer your Registration Form/Certificate with your home nation.

Canoe & Kayak Coach (Sheltered Water)

This  is a 2 day generic training (which can be accessed after the Core training) and the you can choose to be assessed in canoe, kayak or both craft.
